The cost of participation is 40 Euros and registration will be done online on the race’s website. In order to be allowed to participate, a runner must have finished an equivalent race of at least 15 kilometers or reached the arrival line of a 42.2-km marathon (in 4 hours for men, and 4:30 for women). An additional change is that the time period in which a runner will validly finish is reduced to 10 hours.
The "Skai Olympus Marathon" is the only Greek mountain race with an international appeal. In 2007, foreign participants were about 10% of the total of 385 runners. For 2008, the Organizing Committee estimates that the number of foreign participants will double. Two well-known runners have already announced they will participate in the 2008 Olympus Marathon, Nepalese Dacchiri Dawa Sherpa, Swiss Christophe Jaquerod and French Corinne Favre, and we are waiting for more registrations of known runners.
From 2007 and on, the Olympus Marathon is sponsored by the Greek TV Channel SKAI, which is particularly sensitive to environmental issues and which popularity is growing among the Greek public (www.skai.gr). Skai supports the Olympus Marathon as Olympus is a unique world symbol of cultural heritage, and its nature is equally special, being protected as a National Park. The Olympus Marathon follows the path of the ancient faithful who, every summer, climbed to the peaks of the mountain to offer sacrifices to Zeus and the other gods.
